Suga Free
"Street Gospel" is where the pimp voice becomes a formal instrument rather than a claim.

Dejuan Walker, performing as Suga Free, was born in Gardena in January 1970 and moved through Oakland and Compton before settling in Pomona around the age of eleven. Reporting by Jeff Weiss for LA Weekly describes a young adulthood marked by repeated arrests and an entry into recording only at twenty-seven, after DJ Quik was introduced to him at a Pomona card shop and heard him rap on the spot.
Quik produced most of Street Gospel, released by Island Black Music in June 1997. The record is the central document of West Coast pimp-themed rap as a formal style. Walker's delivery is conversational, rapid and comic, and the pimp voice operates as a rhetorical instrument — a device for wordplay, timing and character work — rather than as reportage. Critics have placed him in a line of explicit Black comedic performance running through Richard Pryor; he has named Iceberg Slim and Morris Day among his own reference points.
Commercially the album was modest, reaching the mid-thirties on the R&B chart. Its standing grew afterward: Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Vince Staples and YG have each been documented citing it. He has continued releasing records, most recently in 2025.
