Chad Lamont Butler was born in Crowley, Louisiana, in December 1973 and raised in Port Arthur, Texas, where he and Bernard Freeman formed UGK in 1987. Working as Pimp C, he was the pair's primary producer as well as a rapper, and the musical signature he built — organ, live-feeling bass, slowed Southern soul — is the element most consistently credited in accounts of the group's influence.

The name he performed under is the clearest available evidence of how thoroughly pimp iconography functioned as a frame rather than a biography in Southern rap. No source located here records Butler claiming the life the name invokes. What is documented is a body of work in which the mack figure supplies a posture of self-possession, regional pride and economic independence — a reading reinforced by his business conduct, including founding UGK Records in 2005.

He served roughly three and a half years in Texas custody between 2002 and December 2005. UGK's appearance on Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" in 2000 carried the duo's vocabulary to a mass audience, and the 2007 double album Underground Kingz reached number one. He died in West Hollywood in December 2007 at thirty-three; the Los Angeles County coroner ruled the death accidental, attributing it to promethazine-codeine cough syrup compounded by pre-existing sleep apnea.

"Pimpin' ain't dead, it moved to the web": a 2010 interview blog credits the phrase to Pimp C. In a Pimp Questions interview clip posted on TikTok on 30 April 2026, Pimpin' Ken says Dope Man said it first, in a room with Pimp C, and that Pimp C used it after that.
21 May 2017: the Instagram account @pimpcbook, in his name, reposts Hood Box Office's video of Dope Man at his grave, with Dope Man's caption describing how Pimpin' Ken introduced the two at a hotel and how they later met in Dallas.
14 August 2008: Soulja Boy's label channel, SODMGTellem, posts "PimpC Tribute Soulja Boy" on YouTube (PecDryD7Y-s; 57 s; 5,287 views when checked, September 2026).
June 2017: in an Instagram exchange shown in Hood Box Office's video "Conversation: Pimp C wife And Dope Man share a untold Pimp c story on instagram" (jKH_XPj6ySg, 22 June 2017), his widow, Chinara Butler, confirms Dope Man's memory of a run-in with a hotel worker in Dallas during the visit when Pimpin' Ken's introduction led to their meeting there.
