The Chuuuch and the Famous Players

Bishop Don Magic Juan's church and the Famous Players, the fellowship he chairs: what's documented, the player's cards, and Pimpin' Ken's objection to it all.

"Chuuuch" is Bishop Don Magic Juan's greeting and his brand, and it names a real church. Wikipedia records that he founded the Magic World Christian Kingdom Church of the Royal Family in 1989, after he says he stopped pimping in 1985, and that he was ordained by F. L. Johnson of the Christian Ministers Congress Non-Denominational Council. The Chicago Reader, which covered him in 1994 and 2000, placed the church in a South Austin storefront and reported that he closed it in 1993 to work as a street minister, telling the paper, "The church is in my heart every day." After that the church lived on as a word. He opens interviews with it, as he did with AllHipHop in 2006, and in 2009 he released a recording called "Chuuch, Preach, Tabernacle." The Famous Players is the fellowship around him. LA Weekly reported in 2012 that he set up the Famous Players club in 1999 and described it as "more grand idea than fraternal organization," built on fellowship, worshipping God and hustling. Its public face is the Players Ball. His own social media calls him "Chairman of the Board to Famous Players everywhere," and in a 2024 clip he talks about the Fellowship of Famous Players and its influence on artists. Men who appear with him often use the name. Minister Seamore runs a YouTube channel called Chuuch Entertainment, and interviewers introduce Roadie Mack as a "famous player." No membership roll, charter or registration has been found.

Player's cards. A player's card is an honorary card presented to someone the fellowship recognizes. A 2022 YouTube clip is titled "Pimpin Ken and Bishop Magic Don Juan gave PIMP C a official pimping card." See Pimp C. Young Dope Man, who runs Hood Box Office and this archive, says he was given one too. In his words, he and Pimp C were dope boys who "mixed the D with the P" and got into the church. The dispute with Pimpin' Ken. Pimpin' Ken has publicly dismissed the Bishop's standing as a pimp. In a 2017 interview with Rap Industry, he said the Bishop's "career as a pimp was short lived" because it ended when he found religion. Ken has returned to the subject on video, in "Pimpin Ken on Beef with Bishop Magic Don Juan" (Boss Talk 101, 2023), where he also talks about a magazine piece. Minister Seamore gave his side of the Ken–Bishop dispute over the church on the same show. Young Dope Man remembers the feud being printed in The Source. This archive has not yet found that issue.
