Goldie is a fictional character, the invention of screenwriter Robert J. Poole and actor Max Julien, who plays him. The Mack follows his return to Oakland after imprisonment and his methodical climb through a street economy the film renders as a parallel corporate structure, complete with ceremony, hierarchy and an annual awards gathering. The picture is unusual within its cycle for refusing a single moral register: Goldie is granted charisma and command, yet the script repeatedly sets him against his brother, an organizer who reads the same streets in political rather than entrepreneurial terms, and the film ends in flight rather than triumph.

For researchers the value is threefold. It is the template against which virtually every later screen pimp is composed, so tracing that lineage is a study in how one performance hardened into an iconography. Its production history — location shooting in Oakland, the involvement of a local figure who was killed mid-production, negotiations with the Black Panther Party over extras and security — makes it a rare case where the fiction's relationship to its setting is documentable. And its sharply split contemporaneous reception, dismissed by white critics and embraced by Black audiences, is a usable case study in whose readings the record preserves.
