World Famous Players Ball (2002)
Michael Maroy's 2002 DVD record of Don Magic Juan's Chicago Players Ball, the earliest surviving Too Real For TV title.
Film card: Too Real for TV / Hood Box Office.
World Famous Players Ball is a documentary by Michael Maroy on Archbishop Don "Magic" Juan's annual Players Ball in Chicago. It was produced by Maroy Visual Images, Inc. and presented by Too Real For TV, and is the earliest surviving title from the label. The original DVD, held in the Hood Box Office archive, carries a 2002 copyright on the back cover (the disc label reads 2003), the credit "A Film by M.B. Maroy" and a printed running time of about 90 minutes.
The packaging names Don Magic Juan, Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, Bad Azz, King Jo Jo, Good Game, Kenny Red, Pimpin Ken and Lee Mack. It is event footage: arrivals, costumes, awards and interviews at a gathering that the HBO documentary Pimps Up, Ho's Down had already brought to television in 1998. Being filmed at the ball places a person there; it does not establish anything else about them.
This archive's Players Ball record covers the event itself; this entry covers only Maroy's film of it. Disclosure: this archive is maintained by Hood Box Office, which hosts and sells the film; descriptions quoted from its pages are the seller's own copy.
