Sydney Biddle Barrows operated Cachet, a Manhattan escort service, from 1979 until police raided her West 74th Street premises on 11 October 1984. The operation ran on management principles rather than street practice: hourly rates of $200 to $400, a $2,000 overnight package, scheduled shifts of roughly three nights a week, required medical checks, and small fines levied on workers for lateness. Her clientele included executives, lawyers and diplomats.

The press named her for her ancestry — descent from four Mayflower passengers and a connection to the Philadelphia Biddles — and that ancestry is inseparable from what followed. In July 1985 the felony charges were dropped and Barrows pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor count of promoting prostitution. Justice Brenda Soloff imposed a $5,000 fine and no jail. She was not ordered to forfeit her earnings, and the seized client records stayed sealed. One of her lawyers called the outcome a "mini pardon."

Barrows is the archive's clearest illustration of how class, presentation and legal representation convert criminal exposure into a fine. A 1986 memoir, a 1987 television film and a later career as a business consultant followed. Women charged under the same statute without those resources routinely served time.

One reference describes the plea as "promoting prostitution in the third degree," a class D felony. Two contemporaneous newspaper reports state it was a misdemeanor with felony counts dropped. Use "misdemeanor"; do not cite a degree.
