Soft White Underbelly

Mark Laita's Skid Row interview channel is the largest single body of first-person pimp testimony online, and the most argued-over.

Soft White Underbelly is a YouTube channel and subscription website created in April 2016 by Mark Laita, a Los Angeles commercial photographer raised in Detroit and Chicago whose earlier work included the 2009 portrait book Created Equal. Paper reported in 2024 that Laita, then 64, had spent decades in advertising photography before turning to filmed interviews, citing "the limitations in a photograph." The format is fixed: one subject, a plain backdrop in a small Skid Row studio, and Laita's off-camera questions about childhood, drugs, sex, crime and money. The Fahey/Klein Gallery, which exhibited the portraits in early 2025, quotes him describing the videos as "character studies that attempt to reveal what's behind our tendency to self-destruct."

The channel's scale is a matter of record. The Washington Post reported in February 2020 that it had grown from under 3,000 subscribers to nearly 500,000 after a Christmas Eve 2019 interview with a 21-year-old Skid Row sex worker called Kelly drew three million views in two weeks. Today reported two million subscribers and 307 million views by May 2021; Paper and Fahey/Klein put views above one billion by 2024. Texas Public Radio summarised the subjects as "the unhoused, the sex worker, the chronic drug user, the runaway, the gang member, the poor and the sick." Among them are dozens of men introduced as "Pimp interview," from South Central, Las Vegas, Oakland, Milwaukee, Memphis, Chicago and Brooklyn, most under street names and uncorroborated by any other record. Nowhere else has so much first-person pimp testimony been gathered, which is why this archive treats the channel as a primary source for what the trade says about itself, and only that.

The criticism is as documented as the reach. The Post's 2020 report followed a GoFundMe for Kelly that raised more than $28,000 before viewers questioned her story; the Post verified some of it, not all, and reported that GoFundMe froze the funds, Kelly lost her job, and she regretted speaking. The same report described Laita as "known around Skid Row for talking to people and giving them money," "often skewered in the comments for some of the questions he asks sex workers," and conceding he is "not perfect." Wikipedia, citing the Post, gives his usual payments as $20 to $40 per interview and up to $100 for subjects at greater risk. Vox in 2024 filed the channel under "poverty porn" YouTube in reporting a dispute over money Laita said he had sent to the Whittaker family of West Virginia. Paper summarised the divide: critics call him exploitative; supporters say he documents systemic failure. Laita: he does not want "videos about me helping people. I think that's kind of gross."

The consequences for subjects are also on record. Amanda, a 25-year-old former sex worker who appeared three times, died in May 2021 at a treatment facility; Today reported the cause was believed to involve brain injuries from assaults on Skid Row and long-term drug use. Sharp, a pimp whose 2020 interview became one of the channel's most watched, parlayed it into a No Jumper co-host seat. The channel has spun off a paid website, audio releases on Spotify and Apple Music, and the 2025 gallery show.

For this archive the channel's value and its problem are the same thing. It records, in their own words, men who describe recruiting, controlling, taking money from and in several cases beating and torturing women. It does not check them. Every pimp record drawn from it here is filed as persona, with the women's side noted where the man himself supplies it, and with the plain statement that he was paid to talk.
