Rosebudd (John Dickson)

The most prominent voice in American Pimp (1999), a retired Hollywood pimp who wrote the memoir Rosebudd the American Pimp (AuthorHouse, 2009).

John Dickson, known as Rosebudd, is the participant who gets the most screen time in Albert and Allen Hughes's documentary American Pimp (1999), an official selection at Sundance and SXSW released by Seventh Art Releasing. Salon's Stephen Lemons, profiling him in July 2000, put that prominence down to his gift for talk: he was funnier and more quotable than the other men the Hughes brothers filmed. Lemons recorded him as 47 years old, a Vallejo, California native who had started as a pool hustler, worked Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard in the 1970s and 1980s with as many as seven or eight women, and left the trade roughly ten years before the interview.

His own account of his exit, as given to Salon, is unusually specific about cost. He cited the murder of one of the women who worked for him, a custody fight over his daughter, the arrival of crack cocaine and the AIDS epidemic as the things that ended his career. He said he later married one of the women who had worked for him. The archive records this as Dickson's own telling; the murder is not tied to any court record or news report the archive could find, and it is filed accordingly. On the mechanics of control he was blunt in the same interview: "It's an 'agreed' relationship," and "You can't represent any weakness. If she comes home and challenges you, you got to stand up." Those sentences are the plainest statement in the film's orbit of how the trade understands compliance, and they belong in the record without adornment.

Salon reported in 2000 that he had a publishing deal with a company called Frontline for a memoir titled Master of Pimpology. That book does not appear to have been issued under that title. What was published is Rosebudd the American Pimp by "John Dickson aka Rosebudd," a 348-page softcover from AuthorHouse dated 12 September 2009 (ISBN 9781449011161), also sold as an e-book. The publisher's description presents "the 27 rules to becoming a master at this game" and insists it is not a how-to but an account of succeeding "without brutality or indifference." The publisher's author note says Dickson was raised among twelve siblings, earned a 3.75 GPA at Sonoma State University, sold marijuana and gambled before taking up the trade, and "retired" before appearing in the film. Those biographical claims are self-supplied and unverified beyond the publisher page.

Since the film he has remained a working voice of the subculture: interviews with Thizzler TV, the late Sinful The P, and podcast hosts; spoken-word releases under the Rosebudd name; and a 2015 appearance in a documentary project titled Kings. The persona is theatrical, the biography is partially documented, and the two are separable. The verifiable record is a film credit, a publisher page, a named 2000 profile and a body of interviews. The rest—including the women whose labour he describes as "agreed"—is his account.
