Gangsta Brown is a Bay Area figure who documented his own history in the self-produced DVD series The Life and Times of Gangsta Brown. The first volume was released commercially in 2007; a second installment followed in 2012 and was later repackaged under another title. The releases belong to the urban DVD market of that period, in which street figures bypassed conventional distribution and sold autobiographical video directly to retail and mail order.

The billed lineups draw on Bay Area rap and on established names from the subculture, including Fillmore Slim, alongside Divine Brown. The series is promotional as much as documentary: it was made by its subject, and its account of his life circulates without independent verification. He continues to distribute the material through his own streaming page.

His file matters chiefly as a methodological problem. When the subject controls the camera, the distribution and the narrative, there is no outside record to check against — and the resulting artifact is evidence of how the subculture marketed itself, not of what it was.

He is not Danny Brown. Danny Brown was an American Pimp (1999) interviewee who later became a blues singer; Gangsta Brown is a separate, later Oakland figure. No source links the two names, and Gangsta Brown's own promotional site claims no American Pimp credit.

Claims on his own site — godson of Fillmore Slim, entered the life at sixteen, survived a shootout with Oakland police — are unverified promotional copy.
