City Girls: the mack persona inverted (2018–2024)

The Miami duo's records, from "How to Pimp a Nigga" to "Act Up", flipped the pimp boast so that women extract money from men.

City Girls were JT and Yung Miami, two friends from Miami's Liberty City and Opa-locka who signed to Quality Control Music in November 2017. Their debut mixtape Period (11 May 2018) and the album Girl Code (November 2018) established a persona that this archive files under the pimp tradition for a specific reason: the duo took the mack's vocabulary and reversed its direction. The clearest statement is the Period track "How to Pimp a Nigga", which XXL described in a 2018 profile as reflecting lessons the two learned from mothers who dated wealthy men. In their own words to Interview magazine in 2021, JT raps about "money, stealing, niggas, scamming" and grew up watching relatives "always talking to men for money". The women in these songs are not managed; they manage.

Writing for BuzzFeed News in 2018, Niela Orr placed Period in a wider "scammer season" and read the music as using sex to exploit men, a mirror image of the pimp records that fill this classification. The Fader's staff review of Girl Code called "Broke Boy" a feminist anthem and summarized the code as: no man matters more than securing the bag. Vice's Kristin Corry called the songs "schemer anthems". When asked about the "gold-digger music" charge, JT told Vice that women rappers had always covered the subject and that City Girls were "just more straightforward". The lineage they cite is Miami's own: Trina, whom Yung Miami grew up around, and Khia, whose "My Neck, My Back" they sampled on their first single.

The persona had a documented biography attached. JT was sentenced in January 2018 to 24 months in federal prison on fraudulent credit-card and aggravated identity-theft charges, surrendered in late June 2018, the day after Drake's "In My Feelings" put the duo in front of a global audience, and served at FCI Tallahassee before a halfway house in Atlanta in October 2019 and final release in March 2020. Yung Miami carried the group alone through the breakout. "Act Up", written with Lil Yachty, became a meme hit in 2019 and was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA on 22 April 2021; "Twerk" with Cardi B went Platinum in August 2019 and "Pussy Talk" with Doja Cat in January 2022.

Whether the inversion is subversion or simply the same transaction with the roles swapped is the open critical question, and the sources do not settle it. What they establish is that City Girls made the mack's economics, money for access, the explicit subject of women's rap at commercial scale, and that JT's real conviction for a financial crime made the scam persona harder to dismiss as costume. The duo announced a hiatus in 2024 to pursue solo work.
