The YouTube-interview era: a reputation built entirely on self-testimony, with no record behind it.

ATM Richie is a contemporary Los Angeles figure known almost entirely through filmed interviews rather than court records or press reporting. Mark Laita's Soft White Underbelly project, which records long-form interviews with people at the margins of American life, identifies him in its own listings as a pimp working in South Central Los Angeles and has published an initial interview and at least one follow-up running roughly forty minutes.

In those sessions he speaks about his upbringing, including his account of his mother's involvement in prostitution, about his drug use, and about the rules and hierarchies he says he observes. All of it is self-description, given to a camera, by a participant with an interest in the telling. None of it has been independently corroborated, and the archive presents it on that footing.

His visibility documents a structural shift. Earlier figures reached audiences through theatrical documentaries and retail DVDs, both of which involved intermediaries. His reputation was built on a channel and its clip economy, where the interview subject and the distribution are separated by nothing at all.
